The Mining Surveillance System  has been developed to leverage satellite data and Web GIS technologies for systematic monitoring of mining operations. By automating the detection of land-use changes and suspicious mining activities, MSS supports regulatory authorities in ensuring compliance, improving governance, and enabling timely decision-making.

Project Details

Brief Background

Mining activities require continuous monitoring to prevent illegal extraction, encroachment, and environmental degradation. Traditional field-based monitoring mechanisms are time-consuming, resource-intensive, and often reactive in nature. With the availability of high-resolution satellite imagery and advances in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, it has become possible to monitor mining areas in a more efficient, transparent, and proactive manner.

Objective

The objective of the Mining Surveillance System is to enable continuous and effective monitoring of mining activities using satellite imagery integrated with AI/ML and Web GIS technologies. The system aims to detect illegal and unauthorized mining, identify land-use and land-cover changes within and around mining lease areas, and generate timely alerts for regulatory authorities.

Benefits

1. Suspicious Mine Alerts: Alerts for suspicious activities are triggered based on the processed satellite data, enabling authorities to respond quickly.
2. Geospatial Layers: The system provides essential geospatial layers that support better decision-making by visualizing mining sites, infrastructure, and environmental conditions.
3. District-level Monitoring: Mining Inspectors and Mining Officers can surveil and track mining operations within their districts, identifying suspicious or unregistered mines directly on the map.
4. Mine Registration: Users can register new mines using the platform’s mapping features, creating a centralized record for effective mine management.
5. Mobile App Integration: Field personnel can conduct ground surveys and update the MSS system in real-time, providing accurate survey reports and data on suspicious mines.
6. Route Analysis: MSS’s built-in routing API allows users to plan and track routes to remote mining locations.
7. Drone Monitoring: Drones enable precise stockpile volume estimation and real-time tracking of material movement, enhancing inventory management and supply chain accuracy.
