The district is named after its headquarters, Bhiwani city. Bhiwani city, it is believed, was founded by a Rajpoot named Neem Singh after his wife Bhani. The name Bhani later changed to Bhiyani and subsequently to Bhiwani created on 22 December 1972, the centre of regional politics and hometown of three former Haryana chief ministers: Bansi Lal, Banarsi Das Gupta and Hukum Singh. People used to call it Chota Kashi becasue we can find temple of every second or third lane cornor.

Brief Background

Bhiwani often referred to as Chhoti Kashi due to its numerous temples is a prominent district in Haryana India. The city is believed to have been founded by a Rajput named Neem Singh who named it after his wife Bhani. Over time the name evolved from Bhani to Bhiyani and eventually to Bhiwani. The district was officially established on December 22 1972 with Bhiwani city as its headquarters . Geographically Bhiwani is situated between 28.19? and 29.05? North latitude and 75.26? and 76.28? East longitude. It lies approximately 124 km west of India s capital New Delhi and 295 km from Haryana s capital Chandigarh .

Implementation Methodology

The district encompasses an area of 5 140 square kilometers and comprises four sub-divisions: Bhiwani Loharu Siwani and Tosham. These are further divided into five tehsils: Bhiwani Loharu Siwani Bawani Khera and Tosham along with one sub-tehsil Behal . Historically Bhiwani has been a significant center of commerce since the Mughal era and is mentioned in the Ain-i-Akbari. Archaeological excavations in areas like Mitathal and Naurangabad have unearthed artifacts dating back to the pre-Harappan and Harappan (Indus Valley Civilization) periods indicating the region s ancient cultural heritage.
