Brief Background
Established on 9 January 1964 the Goa Legislative Assembly is the unicameral legislative body of the state of Goa India. It comprises 40 members elected from single-member constituencies. The Assembly convenes at the Goa State Legislative Assembly Complex in Porvorim Bardez. Following the end of Portuguese rule in 1961 Goa was placed under military administration. On 8 June 1962 civilian government was established and the first Assembly convened in 1964. In 1987 Goa attained statehood and the number of Assembly seats was increased to 40.
