Brief Background
The cooperative movement in Goa commenced in 1962 aiming to uplift the weaker sections of society. To oversee and nurture this movement the Department of Cooperation was established in the same year. Initially governed by the Maharashtra State Cooperative Societies Act 1960 Goa later enacted its own legislation?the Goa Cooperative Societies Act 2001 and the accompanying Cooperative Societies Rules 2003. The department functions as the registering and controlling authority for all cooperative societies in the state

Promotion of Cooperative Principles: Ensure that cooperative societies operate in alignment with fundamental cooperative principles to enhance the economic interests and welfare of their members.Guidance and Assistance: Provide support and direction for the development and management of cooperative societies.
Government of Goa Regulatory Oversight: Register and monitor cooperative societies to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
Facilitation of New Societies: Encourage and assist in the formation of new cooperative societies to meet the economic needs of the community.
