The Engineering Department of Chandigarh Administration is responsible for creating the entire infrastructure development in the territory of Chandigarh, including roads, providing and laying underground sewerage and storm water drainage systems, distribution of electric power, and construction and maintenance of various public buildings and housing accommodations for government employees of various categories. The department provides services from project conception to completion and maintenance management in the post-construction stage.

Project Details

Brief Background

The quantum of maintenance work handled by the Engineering Department can be gauged from the fact that there are about 13,600 units of government residential accommodation. Besides, there are other residential and non-residential buildings, including some well-known monumental and prestigious structures such as the Punjab Raj Bhawan, Haryana Raj Bhawan, Punjab & Haryana High Court, Punjab & Haryana Secretariat & Vidhan Sabha, Chandigarh Secretariat, Hospitals, Colleges, Sports Complexes, etc. To keep up with the pace of development in compatibility with the population growth of the city, the building activity in the city is continuing. The daunting task of maintaining these buildings is performed by the Engineering Department through a wide network of offices and a workforce managed by professionals.

Objective

The Department is headed by the Chief Engineer & further supported by five Superintending Engineers responsible for Construction Circle-I, Construction Circle-II, Public Health Circle, Electrical Circle, and Electricity Operation Circle. Each circle is divided into Divisions headed by Executive Engineers, which are further subdivided into Sub Divisions led by Sub Divisional Engineers.

Benefits

Primarily responsible for the construction, maintenance, and renovation of Union Territory government residential and non-residential buildings located in Chandigarh, as well as the upkeep of various roads, cycle tracks, and related infrastructure under the purview of the Engineering Department. Additionally, Construction Circle-II oversees all plantation and arboriculture operations along major roads within the Engineering Department’s jurisdiction and manages the landscaping of government residential and non-residential buildings across various sectors of Chandigarh.

Implementation Methodology

Electrical Circle is headed by Superintending Engineer. The Electrical Circle is primarily responsible for providing Internal Electrical Installations in all the Govt. residential and non-residential buildings and its maintenance thereafter. The department is also responsible for maintaining electrical installation of Govt. residential houses and public buildings which also includes provision of elevators, Intelligent Fire Sensing System, public address system, C.C.T.V.s etc. at the VVIP residences and important buildings such as Raj Bhawan’s of Punjab and Haryana, Civil Secretariat, Punjab & Haryana High Court, Vidhan Sabha and high security public buildings of the city.
