The department of Animal Husbandry & Fisheries consists of Five Veterinary Government Hospitals and Nine Veterinary Subcentres. The Veterinary Hospital situated at Sector-22 is exclusively for Pet animals. The Veterinary Hospitals located at Manimajra, Hallomajra, Sector-38 west and Milk Colony Dhanas provide treatment to both large and small animals. The department also has a Fish farm adjoining Sukhna lake for production of fish seeds and to maintain of ecology of Sukhna lake. For fishing at Sukhna lake, angling licenses are also issued at the Fish Farm. The Department of Animal Husbandry endeavours to promote scientific practices, to enhance lifetime productivity of livestock. Working on the concept of ‘Disease Free Livestock’, the Department provides quality health care services to Livestock population and control & eradicate communicable animal & Zoonotic diseases.

Objective
The Health & Veterinary care of livestock is the primary concern of the Animal Husbandry department, whose endeavourer is to ensure that the supply of milk and milk products, being the essential ingredients of good and nourishing food should come from healthy & disease free animals.
Benefits
The Union Territory of Chandigarh having only 25,617 bovine population is geographically related to the neighbouring states of Punjab & Haryana. Therefore the breeding policy adopted by Animal Husbandry, Punjab is followed and implemented in Union Territory Chandigarh. The Animal Husbandry Department has already switched over to Frozen Semen Technique, as the basic need of Chandigarh is to produce milk.
